Hull Prep

I recently acquired some bottom paint so work has begun on prepping the hull bottom. I decided to remove the four through hulls using a dremel tool and then glassing over from the inside. Once glassed, I filled the remaining cavity on the outside with West Marine epoxy mixed with 407 fairing compound. The image on the left also shows the stansion restoration after completion.

Next I sanded the the hull bottom removing all paint and sanding into the original gelcoat using 60 grit paper. After several weeks of sanding, I then washed the hull down with acetone and began the slow process of skim coating with the West Systems epoxy mixture mentioned above. Once this is complete, I will sand any imperfections with 100 grit paper and re-skim as necessary. I plan on applying the bottom paint in about two weeks.

Removing Hardware - Gutting Interior

Finally got around to working on the boat after a bit of a layoff. Removed much of the hardware from the deck to prep for sanding and restoring. Removed all the wood, including the teak bulkheads from the interior as well all electrical deck components.

Much of the Gelcoat is in good shape on the inside but I am sanding all with 100 grit paper to primer and re-paint. I haven't completely decided what type of paint I will use but will research what is the most cost effective product.

I'm also completely replacing the portals as they are scratched and dulled. Some of the plywood core in the portal openings has been exposed to water. I plan on removing an inch of core in the opening and filling with some type of resin.

Old Boat, New Home

She is a 1969 Columbia 22 of which only 1500 were made. I am unsure of her hull number but will continue the hunt for that information. This is the beginning of a restoration project that I anticipate will span several years. The plan is to restore every little detail in the boat, from the hull to the interior. Luckily there is no real deadline and the only limiting factor is money. Hopefully I'll be disciplined enough to keep this blog as up-to-date as possible.
